Okay, so here's the plan:

What: dinner with me, [livejournal.com profile] markgritter, [livejournal.com profile] timprov, and whichever other amiable persons might make their presences felt. This is not an "invite your third cousin's roommate's boyfriend" sort of event, but if you have partners or children or houseguests lying around, go on ahead and bring them.

Where: Jing Jing, on Emerson just off University Ave. in Palo Alto. If you would ordinarily think of walking somewhere from CalTrain (that is, if you are not me or in a similar circumstance to mine), they are within walking distance of the CalTrain station. They have vegan entrees. Despite the website's claims, they serve food that is not astonishingly spicy as well as fairly spicy food.

When: Monday, May 19, at 6:30 or thereabouts. (Not next week. Week after.) One of the reasons we chose Jing Jing is that they're very amiable about people pulling up another chair when needed. We will linger over dinner, and we will probably get gelato or something after, so if the timing seems like it might be tight but you might be able to make it after all, call my cell. If you don't have my cell number, e-mail me and I will tell you what it is. If you think you can't make it until 7, don't worry, we'll get soup and/or appetizers and take our time.

Please let me know if you think you're coming. My default assumption will be that you are not coming, which will save those of you who are in London or Boston or White Bear Lake from having to comment or e-mail me with your regrets. This includes those of you who expressed interest from my last post: I'm not assuming that interest equates to ability, so please do let me know. As I said, they're amiable about people pulling up another chair, but I'd like to know when we walk in whether we're looking for a table for 6 or 16 or what.

I will think of you as I munch my scallops. But only briefly, because I will have scallops to think of! Not to mention these other lovely folks.

Must examine my own travel plans, but I shall try very hard to make it there! Will give you a definite answer as soon as I have one.

This is so crazy! Not in a bad way, of course.

It is! Hilariously crazy!

At the moment I'm feeling like it would be more practical and efficient to set up a separate trip to Minneapolis than to try to rearrange our visit, but I think that's a temporary side effect of being utterly swamped with work.

I certainly don't want you to miss any of the actual reasons you're going to California!

I am indeed prioritizing those, not least because it would hardly be a bad thing to take a trip to Minneapolis.

I'd be glad of seeing you there. And if there are things I can help with with travel plans (though I suspect there probably aren't, what with it being really very near Caltrain), let me know....

You people make these types of trips to Boston, right? *hopeful look*

From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
Well, [livejournal.com profile] markgritter doesn't have a job that involves travel to the Boston area, and our other reason for this trip is a wedding, and I don't want to hint that any of our Boston-area friends should be doing that.

But I can come up with other fine reasons to visit Boston, I feel sure. Especially given a bit of a head start: I kept thinking, for some wistful reason, that you were leaving Hell Miami in two or three months. Sigh.

You are not alone. It's especially distracting for me because I'm looking for apartments to get a feel for the area, and I keep wanting to call up realtors and ask them if I can move in next month. But the good news is that I've only got a year left, and I suspect that it'll go by pretty quickly.

Besides, I was thinking of making a trip to Minnesota after I was settled in Boston, to hang out with you fine people and eat some lefse. :)

*cough* And DC? Before it becomes NO? Or, as is a slight possibility, TX or FL?

Stupid vertigo.

But on the wedding front: give peoples hugs for us, 'K? We're wishing we could be there.

Silly hooding.

My understanding was that DC would become NO (or rather, the most important feature of one would become the most important feature of the other instead) by this fall at the latest? In which case the odds are against it, though we'll certainly keep it in mind if I'm not as swamped with PT as we expect. NO after the change? Quite possibly.

TX or FL? You interest me strangely; do e-mail on this subject.

I will be there solo. (I believe you would all enjoy meeting my husband, who is a physicist at Stanford, and he you, but he is not much for dinner with a crowd of people he's never met before.)

Yay for the first sentence!

The second is unfortunately true of a great many people I would enjoy meeting and don't have much opportunity to meet one-on-one.

my kiddo is the same way. sometimes he can be convinced, but generally: Extreme Introvert Superpower.

John isn't introverted, but he doesn't have fun with a crowd of strangers if he can't meet them and talk to them in reasonably quiet circumstances. But he would have gone to a small party at someone's house. Different situation entirely.

Me, I am an introvert, and yet I am very fond of meeting new people and a dinner sounds fun. Though not for just anyone, mind. Mrissa being in town is worth dashing down the peninsula for dinner and bonhomie.

Szechwan ho! The two of us will be there. I shall eat the boring safe dishes, and Wendy will have the exotic scary dishes. Possibly if you time it right, you will look over and see me trying a bite of her food and making a most improbable face.
