I have written the last chapter of The True Tale of Carter Hall. For those of you new here, that doesn't mean I have a complete draft -- I write out of order. But I'm done with the very ending.

It might change in revisions, but right now the last word is "hotdish."

This pleases me.

Oh, thanks. But one chapter doesn't feel like a heck of a lot in the great scheme of things; we'll see about another yet today. Janet meets the Wild Hunt on their snowmobiles, probably.

"hotdish" is such a pecular-ly upper-midwest turn of phrase. I know what it means, certainly, as it's not particularly obscure or odd, but I've NEVER heard it in any other part of the country.

Yah, it's all us. But this book is veryvery Minnesotan, so it's okay.

Icon love, by the way.

Yeah... The hardest part was NOT getting Maggie to wear a "string toupe". It was getting her to wear a string toupe while standing still enough NOT to be a thrilled-to-be-helping doofusy blur on my crappy-phone-cam. Jasmine was easy as she ALWAYS looks exasperated by Maggie's antics. My Internal Dog Dialog was something like this:

Maggie: WHEEEEEHOOO! MOM'S HOME FROM WORK! YAY! WE CAN HELP HER WITH STRING!
Jasmine: Liz... About the crack you feed that other dog? We need to chat.
Me: Here Maggie, put this on your head.
Maggie: STRINGSTRINGSTRING! w00t! WHEEEEEEEEEEEE! *prancing around in a circle in a string toupe until it falls off. Patiently stands still so I can put it back on. Continues prancing in a circle until it falls off again."
Jasmine: Dad. About the crack Liz is putting in her own food...

Sometimes the overwhelming good sense of the canine members of the household is hilarious.

Had you not already said this, I would have commented with "Very Minnesotan of you".

But, I won't.

I recently wrote the final chapter of one of WIPs - way before the whole draft is done - and I never write out of order. It just came to me so I had to get it down!

The funny thing is, as I was doing it I thought: mrissa on LJ writes out of order, so it must be okay. ;)

Wiktory! One of us, one of us!

Seriously, I am of the "do it if it works" school of thought, so I hope this works well for you.

Hee!

Seems okay so far. I had to put it aside to do revisions on something else, but I can't wait to get back to it. Good luck with yours!

Do you want to read the short story out of this set that On Spec decided not to buy, while you're waiting? If so, send a note to my gmail, which is marissalingen.

That is so cool.

(I should really finish the story that has the Minnesota Tarot in it some time. Coffee cups, pointy things, food on a stick, and hot dishes....)

HOTDISH!

Why does it fail to surprise me that a Minnesotan author would be pleased by ending a tale with the word hotdish? When you are able to pull off ending a chapter with this all-so-hallowed word, you deserve to be able to eat a hotdish ASAP.
