This country has just elected a president who used the phrase "science and imagination" in a positive sense in his victory speech. And this country has just elected a president who demonstrates to little African-American children before he even opens his mouth that their skin color alone cannot keep them from the presidency. He demonstrates to children like my godchildren and some of my cousins that families like theirs, where their grandparents are different colors, can produce presidents.

I think even the people I know who would have preferred McCain can agree that those are good things.

I'm glad we elected Obama. I'm also glad that I live in a place where there will be automatic recounting on several close races that matter to me. It's important that they will take the time to do it right and make sure that there isn't any question how people voted.

And I'm also glad that I spent yesterday evening reading and watching a movie with [livejournal.com profile] markgritter and [livejournal.com profile] timprov, even if the movie was crap. (The new Futurama straight-to-DVD: don't. Really. Save yourself the time. So tedious.) I finished two chapters of The True Tale of Carter Hall yesterday. I worked out and did PT. I made Spanish rice. I read about the Roosevelts. It was a pretty good day.

Voted and then went about my day. Spent my evening shopping for a niece's 5th birthday present. I found a couple of readers, a feather boa and hat which go along with the stories. She is such a "pink" child.

Made the mistake of turning on the election coverage around 10pm, got drawn in and was up way too late. I kept hoping they would replay the speeches by McCain and Obama. Foolish mortal...don't I know that is what the internet is for?

But it sounds like a great Auntie Peggy present that acknowledges the kid's personality and goes somewhere cool with it.
