mrissa: (getting by)

In the two and a half years I've been posting about regular vertigo episodes*, I have had a pattern of e-mails and lj posts directed my way. One of you will get a cold and have your balance knocked off-kilter, and you will note that you thought of me, and that it really sucked.

It turns out that I, too, can get a cold and have my balance knocked off-kilter. From its current suboptimal state.

Wheeeeeeeefun.

Also it turns out that postnasal drip combines poorly with vertigo-induced nausea.

Now that I think of it, I can't come up with anything postnasal drip combines well with. But worse than that low standard, really.

Okay. Non-whiny posts after I face the lunch dilemma. I promise.

*Yes. Two and a half. June 2006, to be exact. I tend to think of it as "about a year," because Thanksgiving 2007 is when things got really debilitating consistently. But 1) I do have to increment that time: it's been over a year since Thanksgiving 2007 and 2) it's really important for me not to behave as though the only states are "barely functional" and "fine."

No, I can't think of anything post-nasal drip combines well with either. But there are any number of things that it doesn't have that nasty interaction with. I'm sorry you've discovered how badly those two go together.

Blech. I have with some frequency endured a combination of medication-induced and oxygen-deprivation-exacerbated nausea with postnasal drip. BLECH. You have my sympathy.

And again, for emphasis: Blech. I wish you luck with lunch.

Sheesh, two and a half years. I don't know what to say.

Other than lots and lots and lots of chicken soup for you. And hugs. Gentle non-squeezy ones that won't cause vertigo.

My profound sympathies. I really, really hope it's not the same cold I have.

Much sympathy. Do you have any experience with sensory substitution? I recently read Balance (http://www.amazon.com/Balance-Search-Sense-Scott-McCredie/dp/0316011355) and was fascinated by the new treatments under development.

Yes, the clinic running my PT works with a wide spectrum of treatment options, many of them very new. I'm lucky to have insurance, geography, and information from a diligent doctor friend combine to give me access to the clinic I'm using.

Good to hear that! Have you written about them anywhere? I'd be fascinated to hear details should you have time to write or talk about the treatments. (I started teaching a balance (http://athleticplayground.tumblr.com/post/67995165/a-new-balance-class-with-ron-avitzur-starting-this) gym class last month, so I'm asking everyone I see about balance issues, but I don't wish to pry or impose.)

No, I really haven't had the emotional energy to deal with discussing it in much detail. Hope your class goes well, though! Many folks need it, though most of them not as badly as I do.

I would second that "Blech" even if I had not spent four days more or less incapacitated by this whatever-it-is. But since I am, I redouble my "Blech." I shout "Blech" to the hills.

I am starting to understand some of my friends' frustration with my current mysterious health issues.

I want to reach into your head/ears/wherever and FIX it, damnit!

One part water, one bag lemon chamomile tea is doing all right for the moment.

I can't recommend pairing it with post-nasal drip, but Eichten's makes a great Tilsit that has a bitterness that would go nicely with whine.

Eek! Post-nasal drip.

How do you feel about ginger tea? Might help clear the sinuses... plus it goes well with cookies. Lord knows you deserve some cookies.

Right now it is cloudberry tea. Possibly later it will be lemon chamomile tea and a ginger chew.

I would like cloudberry tea! I have never seen any. Possibly I live in the wrong state for it.

Bleagh. Evil viruses are evil.

Ginger tea is a goodness, though, as mentioned above.

I hope that wasn't my cold. You wouldn't have gotten it directly from me, but still.

P.

You were a lot more able to breathe on me Saturday than [livejournal.com profile] rosefox was! But I'm not actively seeking someone to blame for it.

No fair! You should get a cold and have the virus knock your balance back on-kilter! Then at least you would be the only person in the world doing a happy-I-have-a-cold dance.

I'll get right on developing the balance-restoring virus. (Right after I get my iPhone application written.)

I appreciate it. And ideally some of the viruses you develop in the interim stages will have other interesting properties, like the one that gives you perfect pitch or an ability to watch Justice League Unlimited without howling in pain.

I know where you can find some good cheese :)

As for the cold, I don't get drinking tea with post-nasal drip. I always crave Coke, barely above freezing. It seems to clean my throat out in a way that tea does not.

From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
Well, I don't drink Coke or any other kind of soda any time, so it doesn't occur to me to crave it with post-nasal drip. I really don't like carbonation much--it makes my mouth and throat feel nasty and raw under ordinary circumstances, much less when I'm sick.
