Dinner was a cooperative venture in both concept and execution. But it went pretty well, so I thought I'd put it here. If you don't eat dairy, fish, or shellfish, this will probably not be of much interest.

Peel and chop golden potatoes and Bartlett pears. Chop artichoke hearts. Skin and chop whitefish. Crack crab. Chop up pieces that are too big to eat. Chop scallops. Peel garlic and cut the funny bits off.

In a big pot, melt butter. Add potatoes, cayenne, sage, black pepper. Press in garlic. Cook. Add white wine. Cook. Put in pears and artichoke hearts. Cook. Put in veggie broth or chicken broth, fish, scallops, crab. Cook some more. Dump in milk and cream. Keep cooking. Decide that it is chowder now. Serve. If there is enough cayenne (do not skimp on the cayenne, unless you have a [livejournal.com profile] papersky or similar entity, in which case get a slightly different set of ingredients and use saffron instead, on which do not skimp either) you should not have to serve it with red pepper flakes at the table to add.

This would have been better if I'd had the time and energy to make rye buns, or even some other kind of bread, but it was still pretty nice without.

Hmmm.

Being a similar entity, I may have to get some saffron.

Oh, yum. Now I want to make this. But certain household members are indifferent to both crab and artichokes. Perhaps I will make it anyway later this week and he can eat a peanut butter sandwich instead. I can't always be cooking only what both of us will eat!

You could try it with little shrimps; I don't much like shrimp, but you might. Also you could try it with palmitos and/or water chestnuts. If you did that I might throw in some apple juice in place of some of the broth.

I could, and I do like shrimp, but I love crab and John's indifference to crustaceans is only that, not a refusal to eat one particular kind. He did remind me he likes artichoke hearts just fine, it's the eating of artichoke leaves he finds not very tasty. So I'm going to give this a shot next time I make chowder.

Mmm. I will have to try this. I'd never have thought of pear in this sort of thing, but I have faith. And I love cayenne in cream-ish soups. Thank you!

This is why it's a good idea to send Timprov grocery shopping. He comes home with the combinations you wouldn't have expected.

Mmm, saffron. Interesting thought. Thank you.

This sounds delicious. Between our having been sick and Nora's sleep schedule being unpredicable due to teething, we've just been eating quick, bland meals and not grocery shopping the last couple days.

I was all set to cook this--had my grocery list written out--when my husband's doctor called with the results of his chloresterol test: Start Low Fat Diet Now.

Sigh.

Will save for later, to cook for younger and potentially healthier folks. Mmmm, cream and butter.

Tonight is mango quesadillas; they can be made with minimal amounts of low-fat cheese, and they have black beans, mango, red pepper, tomato, and mushrooms in. Which may not fit the specific diet you're looking for but is almost certainly closer than the chowder.

Oh, yum. I'll save that thought for tomorrow. Tonight we're going with scallops and wild rice with lime and dill. But mango quesadillas, yeah!
