The Smothers Brothers didn't do this bit yesterday, and [livejournal.com profile] timprov had never seen it, so I had to dig it up on YouTube. Here you go:

It's the one with cravasses and the Folk Singer's Manual.

They look just like that now, too. Only maybe a little different.

It was a good birthday in several directions. And now I am trying to figure out how I could fill meringue castles with fudge or whether there's something else nice that can go in a meringue castle.

I tend to forget how good their harmony was when they were actually singing together.

Oh yah. They wouldn't have been funny if they hadn't been pretty good.

And they're just as funny the 55th time I see this.

YOu could beat the fudge until it's cool enough to handle and then scoop it into the meringue castles (I'm assuming they are set and cooled as well.)

MMM...

That was the thing about yesterday's show: you could see all the jokes coming from a mile off. And they were funny anyway.

It's the bottom of the castle that worries me in this scenario....

Ganache, maybe? Ooh, or mousse!

I have the album that this is on (actually, I have a whole bunch of Smothers Brothers albums), but I'd never seen the video that went with this, so thanks for posting it. For some reason, I was thinking this was also the one that talked about the Golden Spike at Promissory Note, Utah, but it isn't, at least on this recording.

As for meringue castles, ice cream and chocolate sauce or strawberries and whipped cream (ice cream optional) both might work, but fudge also sounds good.

I heard this one on an album with the Promissory Spike and without the Folksingers' Manual.

It was a good album--silly songs on one side of the record and serious songs on the other--and it was why, in certain situations, I'm still prone to singing "If you get an outfit you can be a cowboy too!"

Yep -- "The Two Sides of the Smothers Brothers." Which also has the song about falling into a vat of chocolate.

That's one of the LPs I converted to digital, should you feel a need for a copy of it.

Done. I put the "Think Ethnic" album on the CD as well, since there was room.

Are you planning on seeing Eric anytime soon? If so, I can send it with him. Or if you're going to Worldcon, we could meet up in Montreal, which would be silly.

Thank you! I don't have current plans to see Eric, but I'm seeing if I can develop plans. Otherwise we can come up with something else (a Minn-StF meeting sometime?) because alas, I won't be at Worldcon--that would have been quite agreeably silly.

Now I do have plans to see Eric after he's back in town.

Castles I have no experience with--Spanische Windtorte, though, has the bottom built in and takes whipped cream and berries.

Ah, the spanish wind cake. Meringue filled with whipped cream. Simultaneously the most ephemeral and most wretchedly excessive of desserts. Also a pain in the ass to make. I admire your devotion.

(I would just scarf up the whipped cream from the bowl, I'm afraid. I'm uncouth and I'm not all that fond of the hard kind of meringue.)

It's the folksinger's creed. When someone says "take it," you have to take it.

I am perfectly willing to let someone else make it. Once was enough, so that I could say I had. If I'm going to mess with filled hard meringues, I'd rather do small ones, or an Eton mess or something else along those lines.

There's one puma... Is it bad if I can recite right along with them for both of those?

I admit to confusion. Pumas (alias cougars, mountain lions, etc) are perfectly native to the Western plains. But they are solitary critters, so maybe Dick was concerned that there were a whoppin' bunch of them down there, when there should have only been two or three.

Or maybe I'm overthinking this.

You really can't take Smothers Brothers routines as reliably informative. At all. That is not their intention.

And I just realized the record is slightly different than the tv show. Crazy SB ad-libbers...

If they're in the U.S. then they're obviously cougars or mountain lions. Only when they cross the border to a Latin American country do they become pumas.

They're like Yanquis that way.

Well, I suppose filling your castles with pumas boiled in cabbage juice is *right out*, isn't it?
