So [livejournal.com profile] seagrit put up this picture, and it reminded me of the events immediately preceding it.

Amber (the elder of the two niecelets, age 4) had just opened her fairy wings from Uncle Mark and Auntie Mrissa. She was squealing and jumping up and down, and I said, "Do you want to put them on?"

And she stopped dead and stared at me with round eyes and said, "Put them on?" As though simply owning fairy wings was more delight than any 4-year-old could expect to have in her life, and wearing them was far above and beyond what she had ever expected.

Yah, so. That's what we call a happy little girl. And a successful Christmas present.

(I think she's a little disappointed that her little sister Lily isn't big enough to wear hers yet, though.)

(Lily is still a bit skeptical of Auntie Mris.)

I don't know which is cuter, the picture or the story :-)

I love skeptical babies. I have known babies who accepted whatever nonsense adults tried, unquestioningly if sometimes with distress, and the skeptical kind are far, far better.

Hear, hear. And though both photos are great, the stinkeye in the second one is just fabulous.

Her momma knew they were coming and got her a fairy crown to match. With streamers down the back.

It is Quite an Ensemble.

*laugh* I love the dubious expression on Lily's face in that second photo.

That's a marvelous story of a perfect present.

I sent my youngest nephew a shopping-bag-full of Chapter Books, harvested carefully from several different used bookstores. I'm told he was even more excited when he realised that unlike the other Chapter Books in his life, they weren't going to live on Mummy's shelves or be due back at the library, but could live in HIS room. Now he wants to have a scanner like the librarian at school.

From personal experience, I know that the scanners that come attached to some toy cash registers make satisfactory play library scanners for some children...

The photos are so great! I wish you could have been my Auntie Mris. No one ever got me anything as cool as fairy wings.

Um...we were glad to see each other, and we use good conditioner? :)

I think the flash gets some credit on the hair (well, plus people having shiny hair to begin with).

As for happy faces (or adorable grumpy ones in the latter case), well, around my family at least it's hard to get a picture with good expressions on everyone at once. We spent some time trying, but I always seem to catch at least one person with fish-lips because the camera went off just as they said something.

My grandmother got an auto-focus camera when I was small and they were newish at that price range. The family was so glad, because she wouldn't have to spend infinite time fiddling with the focus! Then there are lots of pictures from that era when my mom's mouth is open in the shape of an a-sound. Because Grandma is standing there giving the auto-focus all the time she feels, in her then-inexperience, it might need, and Mom is saying, "TAKE the picture!" just as she takes it.

Best hairy eyeball ever on that Very Young Person.

I do so hope that Amber will have more moments as transcendently happy as that one, but some things are very hard to top. I bet she won't forget that one.
