Fourth Street is nearly upon us! The good part of this is that I am looking forward to it immensely. The bad part: I have not found Fazermints yet, and I have limited time in which to do so.

My programming schedule goes like this:

Saturday, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Middle Book Blues. Steven Brust (Moderating), Marissa Lingen, Scott Lynch, Sherwood Smith. From The Two Towers to the recent trilogy of your choice, readers are often wary of the middle books of trilogies and series. What is it about these books that makes it challenging to give them internal arcs and/or satisfying endings? What are some strategies that have made for outstanding middle books?

(I love middle books. This is why I am on this panel.)

Sunday, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Getting Beyond a Successful Character. Steven Brust, Lois McMaster Bujold, Marissa Lingen (Moderating), Lynne Thomas. The forces (money, fans, creative energy) that pull authors back to specific settings and protagonists are powerful indeed. What tactics have authors used to avoid being locked into writing about a single character for the rest of their lives? How well did they work, and what does it feel like to return to a favored character after a long hiatus?

Yes, I am not only moderating, I am admitting in public to moderating. I moderated last year at Farthing Party, but I told everybody not to admit that I'd done it. Then at a panel subsequently (not at Farthing Party), I said some deadly words: "I can do better than that!" Worse, I said them to someone involved with programming. So we'll see how this goes.

It is going to be a good con. It is going to be the best con I attend all month. Wait! Farthing Party has moved its timing, so I don't have to compare my two favorite cons! Fine, then: it is going to be the best con I attend all summer. I am really looking forward to this.

Now if only I could find Fazermints, we would be all set for conquering the world. Or suchlike.

I'm not leaving until Tuesday afternoon. You have just barely under a week! Also this is not my last Fourth Street, and after this fall, Farthing Party is not completely impossible! Eeeee!

The Fazers are not just for you, dear heart, but they are for you, so I will not despair if finding them proves more difficult than I'd hoped.

Thank you, but I am capable of using the internet myself. I don't intend to pay extra shipping to get something expedited. I will be looking at stores in person.
