mrissa: (tiredy)

I have been cold all day. I got warm briefly while I was boiling molasses and sugar and so on. Otherwise no warmth for me. It's one of those times when you intellectually recognize that it isn't cold out but rather cold in. But it's still not comfortable.

I have a blister on my left ring finger. Just a little one, and I'll bet it'll be gone tomorrow. But pulling taffy is not all it's cracked up to be, and I won't be doing it again soon. This does mean that the candy is all made, leaving only cookies. Rah. Well, and cutting up and wrapping the caramels. It's always something. Anyway, I had a realization while pulling taffy that girls in books who have hair the color of molasses taffy don't have hair that different from mine. For some reason I always pictured it shading more towards the platinum. Maybe saltwater taffy was eating my head.

Do not think too hard about what that would look like.

I have learned a bit about writing from [livejournal.com profile] pameladean and [livejournal.com profile] dd_b this week. Specifically, Pamela says, "Don't worry, you can always take out the mice," and David says that mice are better than a mountain range. So very true. (Well...it may depend on the mountain range.) I hope. At least approximating true for the moment. Lending something akin to perspective. If giggly Mrissas have anything akin to perspective, which I think they probably do more than scowly serious Mrissas.

We got the abstract for our house today. We now know who has had our land since February of 1855. For some reason, this fascinates me.

I can't make all this connect up. I will be lucky if I manage to get the mice out in the next two days. If you can tell me something cheering, here or in e-mail, I would appreciate it.

CHeering: well. you're not me, just at the moment. Normally, *I* would not be me at this moment, or at least not a conscious version of me. I am, because I have a plumber in - drippage off roof, which I had someone lined up to fix tomorrow, until I noticed a bulging spot in the wall by Ted's side of the bed. Thank goodness for 24 hour plumbers.

Did I mention Ted is in the Netherlands this week?

Is that cheering enough, the not being me?

On the plus side, you know, 24 hour plumbing services. And also I got some more cards written.

Oh dear! Sorry to hear! Blech! I hope it doesn't...oh. It's not likely to freeze and cause problems, is it? Still I hope the 24-hour plumber came soon and made everything all better.

Cheering thoughts:

- it's supposed to be warmer tomorrow, at least in Cambridge; I hope it'll be warmer where you are too.
- saltwater taffy has not, in fact, eaten your head. or my head. or anyone's head, as far as I know.
- I just listened to Jim Carrey's version of "I Am The Walrus", and it's still very funny.

and the big one:

In less than a week, the days start getting longer again.

Ummm. Actually, I don't want it to be warmer. I want it to be colder and me to be warmer. Also I want snow. Snow, snow, snow! If I didn't want snow, I'd have stayed in California.

...well, okay, probably not. But I'd have regretted leaving California just a tiny bit more.

Homemade taffy! I am deeply impressed. Here I was all proud that I was making cookies from storebought cookie dough (Cougar Mountain Chocolate Chunk. Mmmmmmm.). (Storebought dough! Sigh. And to think I used to bake my own bread...)

Let's see, cheering thoughts:

  • My daughter seems to have dropped off to sleep without fighting it too much. No, wait, that's probably only cheering to me.

  • There are fresh cookies in my kitchen. (hey, and you have molasses taffy in yours! Cool!)

  • There's a new SCTV DVD set out!

There are also cookies out on the sun porch (=auxiliary fridge) and other homemade candies, so yes, cookies are cheering all around. Also, I only have four kinds of cookies left on my list, and two of them may get made fresh when [livejournal.com profile] markgritter's side is here, if I run out of time.

And I have dealt with enough young children to know that sleep without fighting it is a very cheerful thing.

I know you have an appropriate number of commas in your entry title but I don't always see them all from the corner of my eye. So at first glance the first entry on my Friends page reads, "cold, burnt mice in abstract," and all I can think is, "Oh no! The poor mice!"

Which means that when I get to the part about how I shouldn't think too hard about the molasses saltwater taffy eating your head, I instead picture cold, burnt mice with saltwater taffy stuck in their fur. Poor, poor mice.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who focused on the idea of burnt mice....

How can you tell it's one of my mice? Mine were in hell. Does it smell damp, your mouse? (It isn't my usual sort of hell. My usual sort of hell is cold. But it also has Hel in it, or Death's family, and this one has Hades and Persephone, bah.)

How you know it's hell: the wet T-shirt contests are populated entirely by mice?

Cheering? We will be in MN in less than a week now. We have a little snow here. Perhaps we'll bring some of it with us...

I don't know... if the Fellowship had to fight its way over a mouse, or take the mines of Moria, I think we'd have a much different epic than we do today.

That is cheerful. And a little something will be heading your way as well, probably tomorrow morning. I'm going to box things up tonight, I think.

Here is something cheery: I got your card! And I shall try to think of something suitably (in)appropriate to send you in return!

Hmm..."For a very special grandson, on his Bar Mitzvah..."

Here's a cheery thought: you have no burnt mice.

Here's another cheery thought: half of your gift arrived at my apt yesterday.
