mrissa: (winter)

I really like both what [livejournal.com profile] timprov says in his blog post here and the song and video he's talking about in it. I can't watch the vid again, though; we didn't have enough snowy winter for me this year, and I miss the Minneapolis winter it shows too much. Next year. I'll get through to next year. In the meantime, go read about things that have nothing to do with snow, winter, or Minneapolis.

I'm not sure what a Minneapolis winter is like, but personaly I HATE snow. We had barely any this year (odd for where I live in Canada) and still I can't wait for summer - or at least full blown spring. (I don't consider it truly spring until the trees have leaves, and not just buds, either.)I could happily retire to a tropica island somewhere, if I had the money, or an island.

I wish you much joy of that. I need snow, and I need at least a week of really intense cold to reset my brain properly. ("Really intense cold" is that week in January where the highs never get above about -17 or -18 C, by my reckoning. Not counting windchill. We often get one like that. Not always, though. Sigh.)

Whereas I like neither summer heat nor winter freeze and love grey rainy days with temperate everything. Which probably means I need to move to Vancouver someday so I stop being miserable with Ottawa's weather...

They have nice chocolates and a good Lebanese restaurant.

Oh, so many things. We have a lot of good places to eat lots of neat stuff, and if I ever go I'll wish I could at least take Candy Mountain with me (wall-to-wall candy displays, giant racks of colour-sorted jellybeans, pink and purple walls, a disco ball, 80s music all the time, employees allowed to have tattoos and weird hair colours), but for some reason nobody has thought to put in a decent creperie anywhere.

We have a couple of places that sort of do crepes -- Cora's will fill them with some run-of-the-mill ham and cheese breakfast stuff, Stella Luna wants to presoak them in caramel sauce and wrap them around a hunk of really bargain-basement ice cream the size of your head, Pure Gelato has some good ideas that don't really work in practical application but everyone is there for the gelato anyway so nobody cares, and that one place in South Keys claims to do crepes but really does pancakes wrapped around some salad.

Sometimes my friends get all excited about the idea of going for crepes and I just look at them like they're crazy, because really, they must be if they're excited by these prospects.

Boo! There are some good crepe options in Boston and environs; clearly you need to come visit.

(I like Vancouver for a bunch of reasons. Part of it is that it feels like home since it has the PNW climate I got used to when living near Ft. Lewis, but a lot of it is just that it's a really neat city.)

If I ever win the lottery, I will totally come visit you. It would be fun! :D

I had that feeling when I visited Chicago, but mostly because of the architecture downtown. It was like somebody stuck a bay off the side of Ottawa. It was weird cognitive dissonance but also really comforting! I felt very at home there. :)

I've enjoyed everything I've tried at Mr. Crepe in Davis Square. I haven't been to Arrow Street Crepes since they moved into Canteen, but they had a pretty good selection as well.

I lived in Victoria for a while, which was ideal for me. Not really any snow to speak of, much less rain than Vancouver (a few weeks in the winter where it rains hard everyday, followed by sun and mist) and sunny summers. As a matter of fact, Victoria is greener in the winter than it is in the summer!

Even though we didn't have much of a winter this year, we still had at least a couple of weeks of what you call "really intense cold." I guess winter is relative. Personally I find winter to be dead and depressive. The skies are generally grey and overcast here, the trees and bushes look dead, and while the snow is beautiful when it first falls it quickly becomes dirty and slushy. (We don't salt the roads here, but sand them, and it accumulates.) My dislike of winter has less to do with the cold, the snow shovelling, and the eleventy-four layers of clothing one has to wear just to get the mail, but with the bleakness of it all. It's amazing how much my mood lifts with spring - I go from being really depressed to just mildly depressed almost overnight!

I'm sorry you did not get your proper winter. If I could have sent you ours, I would have. It would have made you way happier than it did me, and I feel as though swapping things in cases like that is how it ought to go. Weather is not usually inclined to cooperate with anybody, though, damn thing.

Once again I'm wishing for a Solve All The Things wand. Someone should get on that! (Just not me. That's another problem I don't know how to solve.)

Amber. Ages ago we picked our friend Amber. She is fairly level-headed but not particularly conventional, and she has been talking about getting into another line of work for awhile now. So Solving All The Things would be another line of work.

We had an overly mild winter this year. The grasshoppers were almost full grown in April, which is way too early. And the heat is finally getting to the point where I'm *already* saying, "Okay, I've had enough of this summer/spring thing, when do we get cool weather, again?" It won't start cooling down for at least another 5-6 mos.
