Now that gmail divides my email into three main tabs plus spam, I decided it was a good time to keep track of what I was getting over the course of Thanksgiving weekend. It’s the biggest advertising time of the season. So from Wednesday through Monday, I didn’t clear out my promotional tab or my spam folder.

The final tally: 89 promotional pieces of email. 108 pieces of spam, most of which were also from companies I have at some point done business with.

Out of the promotional tab, two of the items were of any interest or use to me. Yes, two. (Neither was selling anything, either, and neither was time-sensitive.)

That’s nearly two hundred useless messages. Wheeeee.

I think the moral of the story is that I can let stuff pile up in the promotions tab all I want, because seriously, the percentages are incredibly low.

Because I don't want to miss sales, but I've been seriously reconsidering this policy. Three emails a day reminding me you have a discount/promotion going on? Do.Not.Want. I think if I ever create such a thing for my knitwear company I shall promise no more than one email a week. I'm starting to get very annoyed with the multiple email a day thing.

I get far fewer email messages to my gmail account than my other account (er, which I haven't checked in like a month, eep) and yet I've used it for a few retailers and so get promotional stuff and gah.

When the J.Jill email came with 30% off everything on the site plus free shipping with no minimum purchase I thought "self, you have a J.Jill credit card and haven't bought any clothes in ages, maybe you should see if they have anything you'd like" and then I went and looked and . . . um . . . I ordered a couple of scarves. That was all I could find that remotely interested me. Which may be because they had fewer things on the site than usual, but also may just mean J.Jill and I are parting ways style-wise or something. Usually they have something (albeit overpriced) I like.

I turned the extra tabs off almost immediately. I've already got filters in place and find Google's opinions of what goes where distracting and annoying.
