Normal breakfast this morning! Yay! (Breakfast is the easy meal to get back to, and it's not as easy as one might hope. But still.)

And a happy Halloween all around! The dog will not be pleased. Halloween confuses her. She really likes little monkeys, but she's not allowed to play with them on Halloween, just to give them things that smell too interesting to share. This makes no puply sense. Also she is deeply suspicious of things worn on the head -- hats, masks, whatever. She knows who's under them. She just doesn't get why. It's just not a thing a dog would think of.

When I was little, my mom would strip me down to my skivvies and plunk me down on the kitchen table to carve pumpkins with my godfather. The same procedure held for egg-dyeing at Easter. If Dave would move home to Minneapolis, I would keep my clothes on and sit on a chair, but I'd probably still invite him over to carve pumpkins and dye eggs. (Now that Mother and Dad live here, we have added my godfather to the list of People Who Should Move Home. Not that he will. But we're lobbying anyway.)

Good luck to all those of you who are doing NaNoWriMo! I'm pretty allergic to organized group activity, but I wish you well in yours. If it gets you writing something you want to write, all for the best. For those of you who aren't doing NaNoWriMo, I will propose an alternative: International Bonbons and Movie Magazines Month! Had a stressful fall? I don't care where in the world you live! Spend November eating bonbons and reading movie magazines with me! (Actual movie magazines not required. Mine will probably be New Scientist. It's just, y'know, how the expression goes.) We have no cute graphics. We have no discussion groups. We have no progress bars. Why? Because we are too busy eating bonbons and reading movie magazines and looking languidly fabulous to bother with such things!

Other things allowed in International Bonbons and Movie Magazines Month: long leisurely walks on crisp days. Hot beverages to follow. Baking cookies and eating the rejects as they cool. Writing, sure, but not obsessing on word count or chapter count. Buying presents for friends and family, but not obsessing on number of shopping days until Christmas.

Come on, who's with me? And -- to tie in with Halloween -- what kind of bonbons do you want?

I'm with you! But no bonbons until after this damned test.

It's not November yet anyway. Tomorrow, the bonbons!

We'll be thinking of you with this damned test. Hope it goes routinely and is no more than annoying.

I'm with you on bonbons and movie magazines. IF I ever write a novel, I know better than to force it out in a month, particularly a month in which the holiday season starts.

I've written a YA novel about that fast, but if it happens again, it'll be accidentally, not on purpose.

Dark chocolate covered apricots for me, at least for now.
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
I love dark chocolate covered apricots. That's a very good bonbon choice.
From: [identity profile] writingortyping.livejournal.com
oooh. That sounds yummy.

I'm probably far less fabulous in my imagination, in flannel pajamas and handknit socks, but with you nonetheless.
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
Handknit socks are their own kind of decadent.
From: [identity profile] writingortyping.livejournal.com
Definitely. And when a dear friend spun the yarn for them, even more decadent.

Have you priced really good bonbons recently? Meep!

I know! It is for the sadmaking. One of these days I'm going to try [livejournal.com profile] misia's recipe for truffles, and then all my cares will be over, I suspect. Just have to find some free time. Kind of like I have to find some free time to put together the mail I have yet to send you. :P Now that Project Of Doom is finally over, I can start to pick up the shattered remains of my schedule and find some time, hopefully.

I have a recipe for homemade truffles, and I will hope to get some made this winter. At the very least I will need to make [livejournal.com profile] matastas some rum balls -- he missed them last year, and now he lives here!

MmmmmMMMMMmmmmmm.

You're such a bad influence on me, now I'm pondering leaving work early to go bake yummies. I don't have all I'd need for truffles, but I do have everything for lemon bars. Naughty!

Date: 2006-10-31 02:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
Lemon bars are not naughty! Lemon bars are all sweetness and light! And eggs and powdered sugar. Sweetness, light, eggs, powdered sugar: very important.

1 c. sweetness
2 tbsp. light

Mix thoroughly.

Eat.

Chocolate truffles for me, I think. Pure dark chocolate, or raspberry, or orange are good choices (though not the only good choices, I'm sure).

Our pup finds that Halloween is very good for his favorite pastime - barking at monkeys who ring doorbells and spinning in circles, which is why he spends Halloween on a leash, with Mommy and Daddy monkey take turns holding leash/handing treats to puzzling small monkeys.

Either chocolate truffles or orange creams for me, but not until after Nano. It's not a group thing for me as much as a bet with the universe - can I keep writing? I doubt I'll finish the novel in a month, but I hope to write the first 50,000 words. I often write that fast if I have a deadline. Deadlines are my friend.

Do you know about The Candy Jar on Cedar Ave? They have Abdallah candy, locally made, almost as good as the expensive stuff for a lot less money - $12-15 a pound. Or even better yet, the Abdallah store out in Burnsville. They have what they call "imperfects". The last batch of orange creams I got out there, I think were rejected because the dark chocolate coating is thicker than usual. Those were about $8, $9 for a pound, but you have to buy a whole pound.

Date: 2006-10-31 04:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
But you do tend to make this bet with the universe at the same time as other people do, yes?

I understand how deadlines can be a very good thing. For me the first drafts are never the problem, though, so it's less useful to me specifically. As I said, I hope it goes well for those who are doing it. I have nothing against it. It's just not for me.

I have driven by The Candy Jar but never been in there. But my mom and my aunt discovered the Abdallah store a few weeks ago, and I tasted one of their dark chocolate caramel discs. Mmmmm. I had previously thought I didn't like Abdallah because their homemade caramels don't taste like mine, but it turns out that the chocolate kind are Quite All Right.

And dark chocolate coating thicker than usual? Oh the horror!

I am so there with you! Can I watch movies or something instead? I don't like reading magazines unless they are entertainment industry related and those only at work.

Do Cadbury's Fruit and Nut bars count as bonbons? Because I really like those...

Date: 2006-10-31 04:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
Sure, Cadbury's Fruit and Nut bars count.

And sure, you can watch movies. The "reading movie magazines" part is really very much like "going out for coffee": you can go for coffee with someone and neither of you have the slightest bit of coffee. It's symbolic, is what.

I'd like lime cremes with dark chocolate coating. and sprinkles. there ought to be sprinkles. and maybe little foil doilies for them to sit on, or delicately tinted tissue paper squares. and a nice cut glass tray to display them on, and some sort of bubbly drink to sip in between nibbles, perhaps some nice tingly ginger ale. and of course there must be the soft cushions and fuzzy throw to snuggle up in while nibbling and sipping. and possibly a fire nearby for the warmth, light, and faint traces of wood smoke. Hmm, the only thing lacking at that point is someone to share it all with.

Yeah, that's it. I'm calling in sick for November. ;)

Date: 2006-10-31 04:49 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
I know where to get you lime cremes, but sprinkles in combination with them are a bit more difficult.

My favorite candy ever would be the Fleur de Sel caramels, dipped in dark chocolate and sprinkled with said salt, which Fran's here in Seattle makes. But I also like lemon cremes and anything with nuts, so....

But I might do NaNoWriMo anyway. Though it has been a stressful fall now that you mention it.

I am amazed at how good sea-salt caramels can be. The best piece of chocolate I've ever had in my life was a Torontonian sea-salt caramel.

Lemon cremes are also very fine, though. Citrus cremes in general, for me.

I will not try to come snatch your bonbons away if you decide to do NaNo. InBoMoMaMo is an inclusive activity, as well as sounding very silly when pronounced aloud.

When you say "bonbons" I think of chocolate-coated ice cream balls, of which I am quite fond despite the chocolate and ice cream both being of an inferior quality.

Nothing beats Champagne truffles from Li-Lac for a combination of quality and nostalgia, though. I used to get four of them and bring them home every time someone had something to celebrate. Mmmmm.

Magazines interest me not at all, but perhaps I shall make it Bonbons and Only Doing Work That I Enjoy Month over here.

The "reading movie magazines" is strictly symbolic. You can of course read space opera or articles on the evolution of the Bolivian economy from the '70s to the present time, if you wish.

InBoMoMaMo sounds like the sort of noise you make when you're trying to talk through a mouthful of toffee. It's one of those rules of toffee that you will suddenly need to speak to someone just as you've stuck your teeth together.
