mrissa: (getting by)

Add to the list of "things [livejournal.com profile] mrissa should be able to do this week but apparently can't": unloading the dishwasher.

Broke two glasses while falling.

Did not break the me, unless you count two minuscule cuts on my feet, which I don't as they are barely more than pinpricks and have already stopped bleeding.

Am glad I was the only one up so I didn't shower the wee beastlet with glass shards.

Am sorry I was the only one up, as I then had to pick my way out of the glass shards and clean them up while only marginally steady. (Leaving them where they were was not a reasonable option.)

Am trying very hard not to be in a Very Bad Mood over this.

Tell me something good, please. A good book you've read or a good food you've eaten or a good anecdote you've heard.

I'm sure after reading this you'll say I have a rather warped idea of "good," but a book that I've read recently that I really enjoyed was Under and Alone: The True Story of the Undercover Agent Who Infiltrated America's Most Violent Outlaw Motorcycle Gang. Besides the "daily life in a motorcycle gang" aspect (which honestly would have been enough for me), the tales of the times he nearly missed being caught as well as the psychological effects of being that deep undercover for that long were very interesting.

For more conventional values of "good," I've also been reading Robert Asprin's "Myth" books (as I had only read one back when they were new) and enjoying them very much.

The upcoming Ellen Kushner novel is really good. Really, really good.

I had delicious bacon this morning. The last two pieces were just the right amount of crunchy versus chewy.

And I got more RAM for my computer. Zoomy zoom zoom!

In the category of good books, I'm completely taken with Naomi Novik's Temeraire series - intriguing concept, engaging characters, fast paced action.

Good anecdote: me with Reid last night, going to bed...

"Daddy, I want to cuddle."
"Okay, cuddle up next to me."
"No. Put your hand on me. That's *real* cuddling."

I'm doing something for the first time: Watching a DVD movie on my computer. A special case, of course: The Special Edition of Yellow Submarine. Not only does the movie really hold up (and it's been a loooong time since I've seen it) but the extras are good (one of the reasons I'm using the computer rather than the DVD player is to find all the hot spots on the submarine), the commentary enlightening, and the Beatles' music spectacular. The limited animation really works, in a Peter Max sort of way. I was afraid that it would be dated (which it is) and that it would be hurt by the dated set pieces (which it isn't). Maybe you had to be there; I was. Highly recommended.

My boss takes us all out to eat occassionally. Well, a week ago he decided we needed to go to the Buffet. Since he's a manager, he can sign for the lunch meaning the casino pays for it. When the cashier asked if he was signing for it, Doug (he's my boss) said "No, I'm signing for it" while moving his hands around in a mockery of sign language. The cashier didn't get it. And the best part was that they had a strawberry pie which I had for dessert. It was quite yummy.

Funny communal transport waiting pavilions, like the one below, are good:

Public transport in general is also a good thing.

I've been reading such drek recently as I try to fathom what the paranormal romance market is about.

*thinks* Well, the last real page-turner that I enjoyed completely was Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaughn. Flew through that almost in a sitting. One of those: why do my neck and back ache so badly? I just sat down...oh, I just sat down three hours ago.

Grilled lamb! Yum! Hmmm, that could be lunch.

(I'm still catching up after being gone from LJ for this week. I wish you and your doctors the best of luck. Cuddle your family a lot.)

It's not any of those, but I found out that SCIFI.COM is hiring for an editorial director (link may not work unless you're logged in to Monster) and my hopes are high. Finding openings so well suited to me really helps me to keep the job hunt going, and I need that right now.

I'm also letting myself take a mental health day today. I really need it. I hope you can get some rest today too, without too much stress over things you think you should be able to do but can't. (Oh how well I know that feeling.)

Oh, and this email from a very sexy woman has me all delighted:
We could grab breakfast/brunch, see the "Feeding Desire: Design and
the Tools of the Table" exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt, play badminton,
bake scones, or fight for justice. Possibly we could do all five, or
something else entirely, but the activity doesn't really matter as
it's just an excuse to chill with you.

Any of those activities listed sound appealing? If so great, because
it means we probably have something in common besides intercourse with
your husband. If not, I am stunned. Who doesn't like scones? How could
someone find objection with a quick bread?

The paranormal romance market is about dreck. Does that help? (I didn't throw Susan Kearney's last book across the room, but more for the sake of the wall than anything else.)

This Estonian band is rapping about not getting any money, but an English speaker confessed mis-hearing their refrain not as "Me pappi ei saagi", but as "My puppy is soggy". Would not a song about a soggy puppy make great rap?

I am re-reading Lee & Miller's I Dare and enjoying it immensely. And I am eating an apple fritter from Starbucks, which is richly self-indulgent.

My white lilies blossomed yesterday. Last year I had four. This year I have a dozen! And the peachy golden one also put out a stalk this year--having skipped last year, I appreciated it the more.

David, a friend of ours, and I went to Minnehaha park last night and tried their restaurant at the pavilion. It's call Sea Salt and was very good. They serve Sebastian Joe's ice cream and have a menu of very good seafood items for main meals. After that, we tried teaching our friend to rollerblade, which was quite an experience. She had never gone biking, skiing, ice skating, roller skating, or roller blading, so the whole balancing on something other than your feet thing was a little tough. We had fun and she only fell down twice, so there you go. I hope you feel better soon and then we can go to tea.

I am truly sorry about the dizzy thing. I HATE it when I have to lay down or face falling down because I get really antsy to move and do stuff, and what can you really do while laying down? There's reading a book, watching a show, sleeping, and maybe looking at the computer. Not the most fun list in history.

At any rate, take care and I'll talk to you soon.

Heathah

I had some really amazingly good blueberries yesterday. And there's half a container of them still in the fridge.

I finished the manuals yesterday for the work project from heck, and my co-worker and I had hysterics over what the spellchecker wanted to do to our documents. (It keeps wanting to turn the name of one our products into "SEX", and thinks "Novell Netware" should be "Novella Knitwear", which is presumably what fashionable authors are wearing these days.) Having made this deadline means that I can just work ordinarily hard for a while, instead of working extra hard. This is good.
